In the LGBT area, I am shocked about some of the people commenting about LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) people clamoring for \u201cspecial rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month when I published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/lgbtq-workplace-equity-toolkit-launching-february-2020-training-trainers-session\/\"><strong>a blog about an LGBTQ+ Workplace Equity Training toolkit<\/strong><\/a> that will be launching in North Carolina in February, one woman commented that \u201cthis crap should not be allowed in our schools or at work\u201d and that she is fed up with \u201cgays wanting special rights.\u201d When I tried to engage her in a conversation about areas where LGBT people are not treated equally, he accused me of harassing her and reported me to Facebook!<\/p>\n<p>I am hoping that those who continue to shout \u201cspecial rights\u201d read this with an open mind to sincerely understand the difference between equal rights and special rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marriage:<\/strong> <u>Equal Rights<\/u> \u2013 people can marry the person they love, whether they are same gender, opposite gender or gender fluid. <u>Special Rights <\/u> \u2013 if we made marriage only available to same gender couples and no longer allowed heterosexuals to get married. I would love to have someone explain to me why allowing a same-gender couple to get married infringes on their rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workplace Protections:<\/strong> <u>Equal Rights<\/u> \u2013 all people should be able to work if they are qualified and capable of doing their job, and not get fired simply because they are gay. <u>Special Rights<\/u> \u2013 if we passed a law that stated if a gay person and a straight person applied for a job, preference must be given to the gay person. If you are so afraid that a gay person is going to steal your job, work harder and update your skills.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3708\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3708\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3708\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying-527x351.jpg 527w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teen-bullying.jpg 1023w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3708\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shouldn&#8217;t all kids &#8230; straight, gay and trans &#8230;. be able to get a quality education without being bullied?<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Safety in our Schools: <\/strong> <u>Equal Rights<\/u> &#8211; All children, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or gender fluid should be allowed to get a quality education without being bullied or having their issues not addressed by school administration. <u>Special Rights<\/u> &#8211; Establishing top-notch special schools exclusively for LGBTQ children only with the best teachers, facilities and equipment, and providing scholarships to top colleges only for LGBTQ students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Safety on the Streets: <\/strong><u>Equal Rights<\/u> &#8211; A gay couple should be able to walk down the street holding hands without being heckled or physically accosted. <u>Special Rights<\/u> \u2013 Passing a law that only same gender displays of public affection (PDA) are allowed and that heterosexuals are forbidden to hold hands or kiss in public.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3709\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3709\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3709\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom-270x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom-135x150.jpg 135w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom-768x855.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom-315x351.jpg 315w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/all-gender-restroom.jpg 1797w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transgender people should have the right to use the restroom of their gender identity in peace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Bathroom accessibility for transgender people.<\/strong> <u>Equal Rights<\/u> \u2013 all people should be permitted to use a public restroom that matches their gender identity and presentation. <u>Special Rights<\/u> \u2013 when a transgender person wants to use a restroom, everyone must immediately leave and wait until the trans person is finished.<\/p>\n<p>I hope my readers get the drift here. LGBTQ people pay their taxes just like everyone else, and deserve equal treatment and respect under the law.
