Though it has multiple components <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncleg.net\/Sessions\/2015E2\/Bills\/House\/PDF\/H2v1.pdf\"><strong>(link to the actual bill),<\/strong><\/a> the one part that has grabbed the most attention is the provision that transgender individuals must use the restroom corresponding to the gender on their birth certificates in public facilities.<\/p>\n<p>I have previously written two blogs about this bill<br \/>\n\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/hate-on-north-carolina-its-transgender-people\/\"><strong>\u201cWhy do we all need someone to hate on? \u2026 and now in North Carolina, it\u2019s transgender people\u201d<\/strong><\/a> on how I believe it is politics of hate and division which motivated HB2.<br \/>\n\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/north-carolinas-hb2-dont-boycott-us-cyndi-lauper-ize-us\/\"><strong>\u201cNorth Carolina\u2019s HB2 \u2013 don\u2019t boycott us, Cyndi Lauper-ize us!\u201d<\/strong><\/a> which provides an alternative to boycotting our state.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the law has been on the books for a while, I am following up with these \u201cFive Impacts of HB2.\u201d The first two are focused on broad economic impact and the final three are focused on various personal impacts.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Negative Business Impact:<\/strong> North Carolina has lost millions of dollars of revenue and thousands of jobs as various entertainment and sports events have been moved out of state, and various planned corporate expansions into North Carolina have been cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Impact on talent recruitment:<\/strong> I have heard from several of my clients that they are having a far more difficult time recruiting top talent for key positions, including enticing people to take internal transfers from other states. North Carolina is now viewed by many professionals as a \u201cbackward bigoted anti-diversity\u201d state that they do not want to live nor raise a family in.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Overall safety and self-esteem of transgender individuals.<\/strong> This state law that singles out transgender people as \u201cabnormal\u201d and \u201cnot fit to use the bathroom of their gender\u201d both stigmatizes transgender individuals as well as making them an increased target of hate crimes and ridicule. In addition, it diverts law enforcement from more pressing issues and increases the chances of vigilantism and violence.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Impact on transgender children.<\/strong> With a higher number of high profile transgender people \u201ccoming out\u201d and more acceptance of transgender people in corporate America, more children are feeling safer about coming out to their parents and getting the support to live in their true gender. However, now in NC schools they are singled out in terms of restroom and locker room usage, and this undue attention also opens them up for additional schoolyard bullying.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2290\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stock-photo-vietnamese-bald-woman-doing-exercising-outdoors-346177118.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2290\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2290\" src=\"http:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stock-photo-vietnamese-bald-woman-doing-exercising-outdoors-346177118-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"Cisgender people (like female cancer survivors who lost their hair) my now be getting questioned about their rest room usage.\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stock-photo-vietnamese-bald-woman-doing-exercising-outdoors-346177118-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stock-photo-vietnamese-bald-woman-doing-exercising-outdoors-346177118-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.totalengagementconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stock-photo-vietnamese-bald-woman-doing-exercising-outdoors-346177118.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cisgender people (like female cancer survivors who lost their hair) my now be getting questioned about their rest room usage.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>5. <strong>Impact on cisgender* people who may appear \u201cgender non-conforming,\u201d <\/strong>particularly \u201cbutch-looking\u201d women or gender ambiguous people. For example, this law may make it very uncomfortable for a female cancer survivor who has a mastectomy and lost her hair who uses the women\u2019s room and has her gender questioned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This horrific law has caused so much harm at some many different levels, immediate and total repeal is truly the only reasonable option. And even with that, it may still take years for state economic and personal psychological harm to be reversed.<\/p>\n<p># # # # #<\/p>\n<p>Cisgender* &#8211; refers to people who have no issue expressing their gender in the typical manner of someone born into that gender.
